Epic "Battle of the Bridges", 14 June

Greg & I engaged in another 4050 point Epic Armageddon game today at his place, this time between the Imperial Guard Minervan Armored Legion and the ‘Ironclaw’ Chapter of the Space Marines. Greg has painted up some very nice new units for his Imperial Guard, with even more getting assembled and painted. My Marines were the ‘tried & true’ units of past battles, with 3 Predator Annihilator units on loan from the Ultramarines. As with all Epic:A games, this one was close, intense, fun, and filled with fateful decisions.

Terrain.

A large (and beautifully done) river bisected the board running North to South parallel to the long edge. There was a town in the Northeast Oberon) and another on the South edge halved by the river Tycho City). A large wood was on Greg’s side, numerous bits of rocky terrain & a hill on mine. Four bridges spanned the river about 40cm apart & equally spaced.

Deployment

THURSDAY 002 THURSDAY 003

Turn 1:

The Marines set up their Scouts on the enemy objectives in their area, which were near Tycho City  & Oberon. The IG also set up a Scout on the west edge of Tycho City. Marines win the initiative, and move into Tycho City with Tac 2. IG Vulture skimmers cross the river, move onto the central hill, and kill 3 Whirlwinds, routing the fourth.  IG Manticore Arty also shells the other Whirlwind, killing one. Not much left of my Artillery! I’m glad I decided to field no Titans. They’d have been butchered. Predator 3 moved up & shot up the Vultures, routing them. Tac 1 moved into Tycho City. IG Stormblade SHT’s move up and shoot at Scout 2 in Oberon, killing 2. Predator 4 moves up and gets 2 hits on the Stormblade. Predator 5 was suppose to do the same, but flubbed the extra activation. I rolled an amazing number of 1’s at critical times today!  Basilisks shoot at Pred 3, while the Lemann Russ Co. moves sideways into the centre of its area. Predator 2 moves & shoots at a Stormsword while Tactical 3 destroys a Stormblade. Medussas cross the bridge and shoot at Scout 2. Tac 4 moves up and breaks the Stormblade on the bridge. Predator 1 moves up and kills 2 transports of the Mech Infantry platoon on the other side of Tycho City.

Turn 2:

The IG win the initiative (pity that J ).Stormswords shoot up Scout 1 & Tac 2, killing one in each. Skimmers move up and kill all of Predator 2. Predator 1 moves up and kills 2 more Mech Inf Transports. Medusas moves & shoots Tac 4 but misses. Predator 5 shoots back, killing a Medussa and breaking the unit. A Basillisk bombardment  then kills 3 Predators of Pred 4.. Lemann Russ move up toward the bridges for an assault. Tac 3 shoots at a Skimmer, killing 1. Tac 4 rallies.

Turn 3:

Terminators teleport in front of the Stormswords on the bridge. These have to be cleared if I’m to get to the objective. DISASTER! IG wins the initiative. The would-be target Stormswords pound the Terminators & nearby Tac 2. The Manticore shoots up and routs Tac 2. The Terminators fail to move. Pred 2 crosses over and shoots up the Manticores. Several close combats that change nothing. Tac 2 is down to 1 stand. While the IG push has been stopped, there’s no way the Marines are going to force their way through. Both have units on the other’s side, both control all objectives on their side. It’s a tie now , but…

THURSDAY 058 THURSDAY 059 THURSDAY 060

THURSDAY 061 THURSDAY 062

Imperial Guard Victory. With the death of my most expensive unit, Greg gets a VP for ‘break their spirit”,  An excellent game, and Greg certainly earned his win.  We both had “memorable” die rolls. My 1 for initiative Turn 3 was one, another was a melee we had where Greg rolled mostly 5’s & 6’s, then rolled double 1’s for the melee result and lost! I was right not to include Titans, though he used the Titan killers on my Whirlwinds with disastrous effect. All in all, a very balanced game and a most enjoyable afternoon.

May the dices roll high for you.

Regards

Greg
