Greg & I had probably our best and certainly most hard-fought, game of Uncharted Seas last night. He brought over his beautifully painted Thaniras Elves and Iron Dwarves, and gave me the choice of which to use for the upcoming battle. I chose Iron Dwarves, remembering what a pummelling they gave my Shroud Mages in our last fight.

(As always Britt wrote the report and i took the pictures, I have added the forces that were used and who won)

Battle Report

The 4’ x 4’ board was set up with four islands, 2 near the centre and 2 on the player’s right. Greg’s Thaniras Elves deployed along the north edge, my Iron Dwarves along the south. I deployed conventionally, with frigate squadrons on the far flanks, then cruisers, with Battleships & Flagship in the centre of my line. Being faster (or craftier I) Greg also had light units on the flank, but deployed more in depth with his Flagship well behind the line, on his left centre.

As is usual, the battle opened with Frigates on both sides hammering each other. I soon became aware of the facts that not only were the elves faster than me, they had longer ranged weaponry. Fortunately, Dwarf armour is second to none! My central battleships soon began to work on the Elf cruisers to my front, but the large form of the Elven Flagship appeared from behind an island soon had all my attention. On the west side, Elven Heavy Cruisers are winning the fire fight against my Light Cruisers, eventually ramming and boarding the lot. What they didn’t win by boarding, other elf cruisers finished off by gunfire. My left flank west of “West Island” ceased to exist, though my Frigates put up a good fight. In the centre, things are looking better for the Dwarfs, as the BB’s there sink most of the Elf Cruisers (including one which struck an unknown sandbar). In the east, the Elves continue to advance. A Frigate penetrates the Dwarf line and stern rakes my Heavy Cruiser, then the Elven Flagship wades in and with a horrendous overkill, blast apart a heavy cruiser.(I never saw so many 6’s).. Next turn the Elf Flagship also plasters the Dwarf Flagship. The damage was bad, but the critical hit of -6 to future firing made my flagship near unusable. Near, but not quite I thought. I’ll ram. And I did, only to be bounced back 2 inches by some elven force field! The Elven Admiral laughed at me. Cruel. I While that transpired, most of the Elven Flagship’s support units were going under, often accompanied by the same number of my own. Still, it now had to fight alone, and the Dwarf Flagships ram the next turn was successful. It would take 2 more turns, but the Elven Flagship was captured.

On the West flank, calamity followed calamity for the dwarfs. Even the sending in of a BB and a cruisers squadron couldn’t reverse the tide. In a bit of low cunning, a beached Elf BB blew up, killing both one of his cruisers & one of mine, and almost also destroying my BB nearby. Treacherous sods, these elves! Now the Dwarfs were in trouble as a squadron of heavy cruisers and an Elven BB swept around the West Island and toward the rear of my badly damaged fleet. A quick check told the story of the Dwarf fleet with 2 half strength BB’s, a useless Flagship, 3 Frigates and a Heavy Cruiser facing equal firepower of 3 Elf Heavy Cruisers and a Battleship with the advantage of position.

But night was falling (i.e., 11PM), and an add up of points gave the Dwarfs a victory (mainly due to the capture of the Elf Flagship), though as viewed from the Dwarf Flagships Bridge, it certainly didn’t look that way. Both sides broke off the action and headed for port.

Terrain setup

There were hills on both sides, with a river running down the middle of the field. The Bridge was about in the middle of the river. There a few forest here and there. There was also impassable terrain on top of the hills.

BATTLE REPORT:

The French won the invited and made the Russians go first. So the first turn all force advance for the Russian, the only units that didn't were the 6,12 pdr batteries. The French moved all of their units.So there was no shooting or melee that turn. So the start of a new turn and the Russians went first again. So they deployed some units in line and had others move back, across the front. The French kept advancing. The 12pdr battery shoots lots of smoke and nothing else, there was musket fire and few skirmishers' die. So new turn and the Russians keep falling back and the French keep advancing. the shooting phase is more effective since now bases are starting to be taken off. The first melee round went to the French on the right flank(we will look at the right flank from here on) were they won both combats, Russians could not bring muskets to shoot since they were to scared by the French noise when they charged. The Russian command need to pass a valour test and failed so the that command left the field. The next turn the Jager turn the flank of the French on the right side of the river and push forward to take advantage of it, even tho they had lost the line command. There were a couple of turns shooting and both side took casuals , but the jager manage to charge the guns and then pass their élan test and destroy the unit. Another unit of jager charged the line infantry in the forest and the French didn’t shoot (may be see the guns destroyed, meant they lost heart) and they destroyed that unit too. Not all the combat were the Russians way the 12pdr batery was charged in the flank and the crew, left their guns and moved to a jager unit. At this point the French need to pass a valour test and failed and they left the field. The battle on the left side was little more flowing for both sides. The 6 pdr battery for the whole game fired twice and that was at a unit that was in the forest in front of them for just about the whole game, who will go home with a full unit in tacked(think they lost one skirmish stand). The French push their changes home and the Russians could not fire. The French won one and on the other one the Russian fort back and took three base, which was enough to take the unit below strength and have it taken off the table. The next turn the French pushed home and charge again and won the melee. On the last turn the French were charged from the back and were taken below half strength and that forces a morale test on the left side, they failed and were forces to leave the field.

The above is from my head and i guess we did thing wrong and there was no scenario again since, we are still trying to get to grits with the rules. We will be doing N@W again in a fortnight and will be adding cavalry.

Dystopian Wars EotBS

FIRST NAW GAME

Hi Everyone,

This week we did our first N@W game, the points was 1100pts. There are couple of things first up, 1) bases sizes are differant, then want they use in N@W and 2) the figures are not Men at war figures.

So bases sizes are

25mmx32mm for infantry

50mmx32mm for cavalry and Artillery.

32mmx50mm for all commanders.

Greg, Trent, & I had our first game of “Napoleon at War” 15mm Napoleonics Rules. More of a playtest/learn-the –rules game than anything else. Trent commanded the Russians, Britt the French, and Greg GM’d and taught us the rules. Thanks Greg!

The terrain was essentially a “T” road junction bisecting the battlefield with numerous woods and rolling hills. There were no cavalry present, but the French had 6 units of infantry and a Medium Battery or Artillery while the Russians had more infantry and a battery of Heavy Artillery as well.

Both sides set up along the battlefield, placing the French medium guns and Russian Heavies on the large hills on the west flank. The infantry was set up in an east-west line, though I deployed one unit of Infantry, my ‘reserve’ in a central wood.

The artillery duel was rather one sided, the French guns being blasted off its hill. On the east flank, numerous firefights developed and a Russian charge carried the day, breaking a unit of French. This see-sawed back and forth until casualties eventually routed a Russian unit and allowed the French there room to deploy in attack column. This ‘rolled-up’ another Russian unit and the east Flank was secured for the French.

In the far west, one unit of French holds up 2 of the Russians, but in the face of the Russian artillery, couldn’t hope for a breakthrough. The ‘French Reserve’ in the woods dares not leave it as to do so would mean certain death!

A fight develops for the central woods. Some Russians are routed, but the French again are held at bay by the Russian Medium guns. Night closes on the battlefield with the Russians taking more serious losses, but the battle inconclusive.

HotT’s Game

Well after two weeks of have a house full of sick people, manage to get a Hott game in last night with Britt. Any ways as always Britt reports and i take the pictures.

Greg & Trent came over tonight for yet another game of Hordes of the Things. This has always been a favourite of mine & much more like the fantasy novels in their use of magic and large battles. We had a full 72 points of Undead Hordes facing a similar sized Aquilonian force. Trent commanded the Undead while Greg gave them advice and “spiritual leadership” while I commanded the Aquilonians.

The terrain was a series of low hills and a thin forest bisecting the left third of the battlefield. It was determined that the skeletal hordes had invaded fair Aquilonia, so I put out my Castle while Trent started deploying the masses of Behemoth Rats, Skeletal Knights, Catapults, Blades, and hordes of Hordes! As defender, I had the advantage of deploying second. My army was composed of Knights, Bowmen (Bosnian archers), Spearmen, and a few medium horse (Riders).

On my left, things got off to a very shaky start indeed. While this was Trent’s smallest command, it contained 3 Giant Rats (Behemoths) backed up by Blade wielding skeletons! My Knights rolled in…and died! Fortunately, my Bowmen killed off this threat, but not before my Sub-General on this flank had died (among others), halving my “PiP” roll on this flank for the rest of the game. The surviving Knights fought ineffectually against the Undead Blades.

The fight in the centre was pretty much a draw. My Knights killed lots of Undead Hordes, but they just came back when resurrected. My Spearmen killed off the Catapults, but these “infernal engines” proved hard to kill and took many a valiant spearman with them. I was smarter this game and kept my C-in-C out of the battle line. Losing him cost me the last game.

It was on my right flank that most of the real brawling occurred. The Skeletal Knights punched through the extreme right, pushing back two Aquilonian Riders. One soon died, but the other held his ground….well, actually he retreated the whole game, but he kept two enemy Knight units ‘amused’. While that was happening my Knights on the hill fought a see-saw battle up & down the hill there with the Skeletal Knights backed up by Hordes. Aquilonia finally prevailed, but the cost was high.

Eventually The Undead Hordes ran out of…undead! That is to say, I won by destroying half his force. Mind you, Aquilonia wasn’t in a great position either. At least the Castle was saved!

HotT Battle

Well last night down at Britt's we played a HotT game, as the norm Britt wrote the report and i took the pictures.

The King is dead. But hours ago King Trantos headed the Chivalry of Aquilonia in battle against the Undead Hordes that have recently erupted from the wilds of Pictland. Now ‘The Golden Lion’ banner of Aquilonia flutters at half mast in memory of our gallant dead. The Undead Hordes were triumphant!

The battle started well. While greatly outnumbered, our Bossonian longbows destroyed the Giant Rat behemoths on our left flank as the pride of Aquilonian chivalry smashed the Undead Swordsmen and drove them from the central hills. Even the Mercenary Riders on the right stood up to the Undead Knights like heroes and pushed them back. But our brave King was too bold, and while he almost killed the Undead Lord in single combat on the central hill, King Trantos was eventually forced back and slain. With his death, the fighting spirit left the Aquilonian Army. Prince Stanos rallied the men as best he could, but the battle was lost. He regrouped the men at Halliffia Pass. There would be other battles with these Undead Hordes, and next time Aquilonia would be avenged!

Greg & Trent’s 28mm 72 point Undead Hordes faced my Aquilonian army tonight in a very beautiful and exciting ‘Hordes of the Things’ battle. A group of 4 hills diagonally bisected the battlefield with a small forest on the far edge of each flank. Greg was the defender and deployed his Undead Hordes and Graveyard Holdfast as my Aquilonians with Knights, Riders, Spears & Bowmen moved forward in 3 hosts to destroy them. There was heavy fighting across the battlefield, with heavy losses. My Knightly King just kept winning, and advancing after combat. I’d have liked to pull him back, but there was nowhere to do so. Finally he was forced back with no where to go. The Golden Lion banner was seen to waver, and then go down, surrounded by Undead Hordes. Many of his companion Knights had met a similar fate, and the loss of the King spelt the end of Aquilonian fortunes in this battle. There would be others, next Monday to be exact! See you guys then as Aquilonia tries to redeem its tarnished honour! Great game tonight and good fun. Greg & Trent deserved their victory.

Battletech Report

Well finally got a game in on Monday night with Britt, any ways he wrote the report and i took the pictures.

Greg & Trent arrived at 7PM for our much delayed Battletech rematch. It turned out to be a Halloween horror story of its own as “Trent’s Terrors”, a 200 ton Merc force employed by House Davion, attempted to defend Carson’s World from a similar force of ‘Sharp Shooters” from House Marik.

Trent’s Terrors: Cicada, Zeus, & Awesome.

Sharpshooters: Atlas, Two Hunchbacks.

The battlefield was a long valley with a stream on either side with a tall promontory called Patch’s Peak on the northern end. It was here that Trent’s Terrors deployed, with the Sharpshooters coming in from the south.

As the Sharpshooters advanced up the valley, with the Atlas in the lead, the Terrors dispatched the Cicada down the eastern flank under cover of a light wood there. This forced the Sharpshooters to peel off one of the Hunchbacks (Grey Ghost) to reverse and deal with this threat. This proved a much tougher assignment than envisioned! Both the Atlas & the other Hunchback (Blackie) now began to take damage from the Zeus & Awesome atop Patch’s Peak and in wooded cover, but suffered only lightly though they did no damage in return. Grey Ghost got some solid hits into the Cicada’s Centre torso, but return PPC fire proved deadly as two critical engine hits rendered Grey Ghost “walking wounded”. A charge attack was easily avoided as well. The main column of the Sharpshooters moved on, seeking cover at the base of Patch’s Peak, but this proved only moderately effective. Both sides scored some telling damage on the other.

The Cicada, seeing the wounded Hunchback no threat to the defenders on the Peak, raced to rejoin its friends. But Grey Ghost still had some teeth, if no legs and a lucky shot at the departing Cicada caused an ammo explosion that was both beautiful and horrible to behold.

Back on top of the Peak, things had gotten ‘up close and personal’. The Black Hunchback & Atlas ascended to the top and the dirty business of point blank firing took its toll. Blackie lost its AC20, and a lot of armor. Even the Atlas was taking hits at an alarming rate. But the Awesome keeled over from hits, and then the Zeus, fighting heroically to the end, at last fell to the Atlas.

Victory, but a very costly one. Neither Hunchback would be operational again without extensive repairs, and even the mighty Atlas had shed as much armor as it had left. With a toast of respect to their fallen foes, the Sharpshooters shambled north to claim their prize.

Excellent nights gaming Greg & Trent. Most enjoyable.

40K GAME WITH THE OLDEST

Well this blog is late since the 40K game was played over a 2 month ago. I’ve have been flat out with study and on top of that health issues and just begin lazy all contribute to a late blog. The total points was 4000 a side.

Any ways forgot to take notes, so the comments will be off the top of my head.

The chaos forces, well organised and read to go.

The space marine forces, uhmm not organised and not read to go

First turn.

Not much happen, a lot of movement to get into position, with the SM taking some pot shots

Second turn.

More movement and lost of shooting by the SM, with deployment of termies from land raider. The csm teleported in with their termies and they also dropped in some demons.

Third and fourth turns.

Loads of hand to hand combat and shooting, with more termis teleporting in for the SM and CSM also dropped in some demons. The SM were getting the upper hand at this point. The outstanding moment when khan the betrayer assaults a tactical unit and makes them fleet down the street and he chases. Next turn to only have the vindicator blow him into a million pieces.

Fifth Turn and more hand to hand and not much shooting. The SM wins

Mini-BattleTech and Normal Battletech

Well finely finish the battetech stuff, I ended up buying two box's each of the clan and insphere for the Battleforce game. These mech are smaller then the standard battletech mech, I have add some standard mechs in the shoots with the battleforce stuff.

FSA Fleet for Dystopian wars

I have been going through the FSA fleet, below are the full fleet to this point. I have a dreadnought, 6 destroyers and 6 escorts coming. I still need to do the flying tokens only 26 of those. The fleet will need to have the squadrons marked out and i will need to do the windows(not looking forward to this). I currently have a EBOS fleet the same size that I'm painting at the moment. Then add to this the land forces for both sides.

The figures were fun to paint and a shit load of detail to, i will try and take more when i have marked out the squadrons.

UNDEAD HoTT’S ARMY

I manage to finish a 72 point undead army for Hott’s to go along with the lothr stuff i have base the same way. The army list is as following:

Well manage to get hold of the new Iron Dwarves Piston Class Ram Cruiser, nice figure. I pained them the same way as the rest of the fleet. I also got a ELDER DRAGON too.

Battletech:

Manage to get a another game of battletech in last night, any ways Britt did the report and i took the pictures.

“Trent & Greg came by for a game of Battletech tonight. Trent used his 5 Mechs ( Whitworth, Trebuchet, Commando, Jenner, & Hunchback) against my 4 Hunchbacks, giving us 200 tons per side. The terrain was on a 6’ x 4’ mat, with high mesas surrounding a city with wooded parklands to its west. Most of the fighting occurred here. Greg GM’d and did all the hard calculations. Thanks Greg.

Trent deployed on the far side of the woods, wisely in close formation with the light Mechs leading and covering the heavier support Mechs. I tried to divide his force by moving 2 of my Hunchbacks (Stripes & Spots) down the road straight toward him while sending the other two (Night & Fog) around the west wood edge. Trent however refused to be drawn off, so my “flanking force” reunited with the main group inside the woods. Trent’s Mechs had moved up while his Jenner took a high position on the rooftops to the parklands east. Spots was the first major casualty. While it never actually died, it had but 1 Medium laser left after it had been badly shot up. The Whitworth and the Trebuchet poured in merciless fire, especially onto Fog. Trents Commando was pretty shot up and eventually fell over, got up, then fell for good. Just to the east both the Whitworth and ‘Fog” blew up due to ammo explosions. Our 2 badly shot up Hunchbacks got into a kicking contest when all each had otherwise left to fight with were one Medium Laser. Finally ‘Stripe” got behind Trent’s Hunchback and blew it up. The valiant Commando, still on the ground, got off a few more shots. Spots, now with engine trouble and pilot hits was lucky to stay upright.

But the tide had turned. The Jenner shifted positions on the roof tops to get a better shot. With the death of the Hunchback, my two Mechs Night and Stripes could now give the Jenner their full attention, and they did. An ammo explosion on the Jenner signaled the death of another good Mech Pilot, and the end of the battle. The Commando was captured but its pilot was granted “honours of war” to return to his unit. All had fought bravely as my destroyed “Fog”, and badly shot up “Spots” and “Stripes” will testify. This was a very good game with plenty of laughs and hard decisions.”

Well again it has been a while since i have updated the blog. Its only a short one. I would have taken more pictures, but forgot i had my camera was in the bag.

we got down to two games of Battletech. These were hurriedly thrown together and terrain set up. See photo. In both Greg's Whitworth and JagerMech faced my Atlas & Hunchback. While both were fun games, Greg was seriously at a disadvantage since he only had 105 tons vs. my 150. Oh well, he almost won the first game anyway. In the picture above you see that he's already destroyed my Hunchback(too many head-shots!!!) and his Jagermech is doing a "death from above" on my Atlas. While the Atlas eventually won, it was a near run thing. A similar result in the second game. Next Monday we'll try again, but with this time having an equal 200 tons per side.

Well that's it, short and sweet. the postman has turned up with my land forces for Dystopian wars

UNCHARTED SEAS

Well its been a while, i have been tired up with STEPS again this time on campus.So not much has been down since then. The following uncharted seas stuff has been painted last year, but i had not gotten around to putting up on the site. I have also included the islands I'm been doing as well, they are not finish and still need work to be done on them.

Napoleonic's Rank & File

Greg came over for a Napoleonics game using 15mm miniatures and the "Rank & File" rules at 6:30PM. Greg played the French using some newly aquired miniatures that really looked superb, while I played with my considerably less well painted Russians. Both armies were composed of 10 units: 5 Infantry, 1 two-gun light battery, 1 two-gun medium battery, and a unit each of Hussars, Lancers, and Cuirassier cavalry. The terrain had a central town (Novogord) with woods & croplands to the west and hills to the east.

I set up first and Greg moved first. We both had our medium guns on the Eastern Hills, an infantry centre, and cavalry on the flanks, Greg overmatching my cavalry in the west.

I was able to reach the town first, and occupied it with my Guard Infantry. The French did nasty work on my easternmost infantry with his artillery, finally forcing me to go into open order. Also on the Eastern Hills my Hussars and Greg's Lancers had several clashes. The Lancers were finally pushed back at great cost. My artillery destroyed one of the French guns and the troops in Novogord were just hanging on by their fingernails. A series of misfortunes beset the French flanking manoeuver to the west. Their hussars failed morale, and their resulting retreat allowed the Russian infantry to close with & destroy them. The French Cuirassier came to a similar end when charged by Russian Lancers supported by light guns and Skirmishers, but not before it had chased away the light guns.

A charge by the Russian Cuirassiers up a hill to take out the enemy guns ended in abject failure. It suffered 1/3 losses and retreated behind the infantry skirmishers.

Things also hotted up in Novogord as the French infantry forced out the Russian Guard. Half the French heavy battery was destroyed by its opposite number. The infantry fight before and to the east of town swung back and forth, with heavy losses on both sides.

In the end, French losses became too much and they fell back stubbornly. Sadly, at the moment of victory, my sub-general was captured leading the Cuirassiers, and is now a POW.

A very close game indeed, and one we both enjoyed greatly. The French are now regrouping and will launch another attack next Monday.

FIRESTORM GAME

(Pic: Firestorm Armada Battle) Massive explosions, torpedo runs, and main gun salvos amid the stars were the norm in last nights “Firestorm Armada” game. Also Battle Fatigue. Greg & I were hard at it from 6:30 to 10:30, and were exhausted after 4 hours of very intense gaming!

Greg brought over his 2 Firestorm Armada Fleets, Terran (which I used) and The Directorate (which Greg played). The Terran fleet is realistically painted up in tones of grey with all the beautiful detail of these models highlighted. The Directorate models are even more nicely painted with yellow/gold and much fine detail displayed in other colours. We played on a black star map cloth that Greg had made with several small planets and a few asteroid fields, both mounted on stands.

As this was our first game, we left out the fighters, bombers, carriers, assaulters and other small craft and just concentrated on the ‘big boys’ of the fleet. As I recall, we both had 2 Battleships, 3 Heavy Cruisers, 6 Light Cruisers, and 12 Frigates. A big battle by anyone’s standards. We formed opposing battle lines; my BB’s being centre & right flank. Greg did the same, which might explain why we both broke the others left flank. The rules were very similar to Uncharted Seas since we didn’t use Carrier-born craft, so things flowed quickly. Greg sent his Frigates forward to act as a screen while I kept mine in closer to my fleet. Point Defence destroyed a lot of the incoming torpedoes but nothing could stop the massive broadsides of the Battleships & heavy Cruisers. Ships began to disappear to form expanding clouds of incandescent light all over the table.

In the centre, concentrated fire from my BB’s & Cruisers badly crippled a Directorate Battleship. I sent in a Cruisers squadron to finish it off, but the @!**#!! thing exploded, taking 2 of my Cruisers with it and damaging the third. That hurt. Much the same thing happened on my left, contributing to my loss of that flank. We suffered a massive explosion on one of my Heavy Cruisers that also took out the rest of the squadron! Still, Greg’s left flank was reduced to a lone Frigate ordered to ‘hold the flank’.

Still, the war went on. By about 10:30 both fleets had suffered grievous losses and withdrew to fight another day. The Directorate & the Terrans both still had a Battleship and a Cruiser, but the Terrans also had 7 Frigates as well thus gaining them a marginal and Pyrrhic victory. An excellent and very intense game. The beautifully painted models and atmospheric terrain didn’t hurt things either! Thanks Greg.

Hotts Game

Greg came over about 6:30PM and we had a Super “Hordes of the Things” game of 72 points per side. Greg fielded a “Haradrin” army of LotR miniatures, all beautifully painted. I fielded a Bretonnian Army, with the addition of 3 units of “Beasts”, ie trained Cougars. The terrain had 2 steep hills & woods on the eastern edge, a central diagonal road, and 4 low small hills on the western side. On to the battle. My Eastern flank was made of Shooters, 2 units of Cougars, and a Hero. My Centre was Knights backed by an Aerial Hero on a Griffon & 2 Pegasus. My Western flank held Hordes (surprisingly good troops!), more pussycats, a Mage, and Blades. Facing my Shooters were some of the same plus a Haradrin Hero in a Chariot. The Haradrin Centre had a Behemoth, Spear, and Shooters, Riders, and a Mage in the woods while his Western wing had another Behemoth and lots of Riders & Shooters.

I got in trouble right away. Greg’s Riders in the Centre got stuck into my Knights, and were surprisingly hard to drive off. Ah, I have a cunning plan! I’ll fly my Pegasus behind them preventing their retreat when my Shooters blast them. Not only did my Shooters fail to drive the riders back, my poor Pegasus were lucky to escape with their lives! My Hero on the Eastern flank was less fortunate. Attacking the Haradrin Hero in a Chariot proved unwise, and he came to a sticky end. To make matters worse, he was also a sub-General, so now all commands on this flank would take double the PIPs. Still, we more or less gave as well as we got. The Western Behemoth was killed, and my Hordes were chasing his Mage (oh the indignity!).

Then I got in trouble again. Not learning from my last mistake, this time I put my C-in-C on the Griffon behind enemy lines to prevent retreats. Same result as last time. I kill nothing and barely escape with my life! Flying is highly overrated! While my Eastern flank was being crushed by that %@!!&* Hero Chariot, and my pussycats Meowing their last, I was having better luck in the West. Hero, Blades, & Mage finally got the upper hand. The points lost by both sides were now still about equal and getting close to the critical break point. While my Eastern flank was obviously lost, many enemy units were left behind and not able to join in the fray. My sole (soul?) surviving religious Horde now took out the Haradrin Mage and helped to turn the flank in the centre. Still, the battle losses mounted rapidly for both sides.

At the end, The Haradrin lost the 36 points needed to break them. The Bretonnians were little better with 31 points lost. Pyrrhic victory. A fun, fast, and very enjoyable time was had by all and I would recommend Hordes of the Things to anyone interested in a good Fantasy Battle. Magic was there, but not overpowering. Your tactics on the field were far more important than your army selection.

First game of Hotts

As always Britt wrote the report and I took the pictures.

Greg arrived a bit before 7PM for our usual miniatures game. This week it was to be a 48 pt/side battle of Hordes of the Things (HotT). Greg chose the Bretonnian Army (Knights, Hordes, Blades, Heroes, Pegasus flyers, & very tough little Sorceress on a Unicorn) so I fielded the Orcs (Blades, Dragon, Riders, Trolls, a giant, Mage, Heroes & Beasts). The field had a central rough hill, with gentle hills and a wood on either side. See Greg’s blog for a photo essay of it all. We rolled off and Greg was the defender, but moved first. His 2 Pegasus over flew my lines and were a worry, but finally came to a bad end when my Dragon appeared and with the aid of my General Hero, destroyed them. The Orcs were leading for most of the first half of the game. I’d even killed one of his Generals. But that Bretonnian Sorceress drove away my Riders on my right and even was able to stand toe to toe with my Dragon! My central thrust came to a bad end when Bretonnian archers wiped out my Trolls and killed a General. Things looked pretty sticky on my left as well. Seeing his duty and doing it, the Orc’s Dragon flew toward the Bretonnian Stronghold to burn it down. But it was too late. My centre crumbled, and before the Dragon could even reach the enemy Stronghold, the Orcs were running away (ie, I’d lost over 24 points worth of troops). Victory to Bretonnia! (& Greg).

3RD GAME OF UNCHARTED SEAS

Greg & I played our best game of “Uncharted Seas” ever. Even though the Sanlando Marine (Shroud Mage) fleet lost in the end, it was a very enjoyable and tightly contested game….and what a climax. Games don’t end with a bigger bang than this one!

Both sides started out with about 800 points, and while mine was the same as last weeks, Greg exchanged many of his Cruisers for more Destroyers. This was a wise move that certainly made his fleet more effective. I wish I could have exchanged my Submarine for something, but am still awaiting my SM Battleship, 2 Cruisers, and an Orc Starter Fleet. More on him later. http://pfe100.blogspot.com/ There was a large seaspire with a surrounding beach on Greg’s side, and 2 smaller ones on my side, both about 12” in from the baselines. The set up had our heavier units in the centre and the Frigates on the flank. Greg wisely held back his BB, not wishing it to be captured a 3^rd time. It would prove to be a decisive player at game end. So in we went. On my right my Frigates and Heavy Cruisers engaged his opposite number of Destroyers. In the centre the Flagships of both sides took a pounding while on my left Greg’s Cruisers & mine fought it out toe to toe. My submarine attack here proved to be just as useless as in the last game. A ram for little or no damage! It did more damage with its 5 cannon on the surface. The subs crew is getting transferred to a Cruiser in our next game for sure. J My Flagship was badly shot up & tried to take the Dwarf Flagship with it by ramming. In this it failed, sinking in the attempt, but so damaged it that soon both slid beneath the waves. So had many Dwarf Cruisers and many other ships as well. All was set for the climax of “The 3^rd Battle of Ironbottom Bay”.

Greg had skillfully provided a picket of a Frigate to prevent my Battleship from ramming his BB. These were about the only healthy ships on either side. I had a cunning plan. My Frigates would sink the protecting Frigate while my other Frigate squadron amused his last Destroyer squadron. This they did, and as soon as he moved a Cruiser, my ram would commence. It never happened! The Iron Dwarf Cruiser threw up a wall of fire that surprisingly was able to get a ‘critical hit’ on my BB. Greg threw a double 1….My Battleship exploded!!! Not only that, all 6 of my supporting Frigates were sunk when they were engulfed in the fireball! Now that’s a climax! With but 2 Cruisers (and that @!%^#@! Submarine) left, the Sanlando Marine withdrew to fight another day. Damn good game Greg. The options of shooting, boarding, or ramming allow for a wide variety of tactics found in no other naval game. The Iron Dwarfs won a hard fought battle and certainly deserved their victory. The more games we play, the more of the tactical nuances we discover. Greg’s “screening maneuver” with his Frigates & DD’s will certainly be remembered and duplicated.

Uncharted seas

Well another game of uncharted seas was played last night at Britt, as always he wrote the after action report and i took the pictures.

This was our first large battle of ‘Uncharted Seas”. My Sanlando Marine (Shroud Mage) had 825 points while Greg’s Iron Dwarf’s had 830. Both sides had 7 squadrons of Flagships, Battleships, light & heavy cruisers, frigates and submarines. Greg also had some Destroyers. We played on a 4’ x 4’ blue painted board with a couple of small islands and a rock pillar for terrain.

There was far too much action to easily record. Greg’s rockets from his destroyers pasted my Lt Cruisers from long range. My western frigate squadron sunk a Dwarf Frigate & I had an early success sinking another Dwarf Frigate & a Cruiser. I got my lumps as well though. The Iron Dwarf Battleship caused my Heavy Cruisers some grief while his Frigates scuttled about everywhere. My cries for “more steam” (& its + 2” MP) went largely unanswered ( I couldn’t roll a 5 or 6). I guess it all went to the cook to steam the veggies. When it does work however, it’s a thing of beauty. My Flagship was able to ram the Dwarf Battleship and capture it. Meanwhile, while I was victorious in the east, disaster was the story in the west. My much vaunted submarine attack on Greg’s flagship hardly bothered the paintwork. My own Cruisers were taking a heavy pounding & his subs flamed my Cruiser. Soon most of my Frigates were lost with all hands. The Dwarf submarine attack was also much more successful than mine. Ships on both sides continued to slip beneath the waves, but a pattern was developing. Greg held the west of the bay, me the east. Our 6^th turn had long since passed, so we decided to call it a draw at that point.

Tonight’s game was far bloodier than previous ones. 800 points is just about perfect for a nights game for 2 players, and as battle fatigue set in, I was having a hard time just controlling 7 units. The combination of the visual aspect of the games large models, clean & fast playing rules, and a good opponent in Greg made for a very enjoyable nights game. I’m looking forward to playing many more games of Uncharted Seas in the near future.

Next week we’ll have another 800 point game of Uncharted Seas. Anyone who’d like to, come on out then. I’ll teach you the rules & put you in command of a squadron. “Death to the Iron Dwarfs”!

UNCHARED SEA

Well we had our first game of uncharted seas last night, and I had a blast playing it. As all ways Britt did the below report and I took pictures. Although I didn't take many, Three shots is all I took.

Greg came over a bit before 7PM for our first battle of ‘Uncharted Seas’. It turned out even better than I’d hoped, and US now rivals E:A for my favourite game. While Greg’s Iron Dwarves’ fleet was nicely painted in grey, bronze, wood decking & green squadron ID markings the Shroud Mages were ‘undercoat white’ to conceal themselves in the mists & fog so common in this area of the Thousand Islands. It’s my story & I’m sticking to it. Anyway, we set up our respective Starter Fleets (1 Battleship, 3 Cruisers, and 6 Frigates) on the 4 foot by 4 foot board I’d painted up to look wave-like, and placed a small island and 2 pillars to give us a bit of terrain. Greg advanced diagonally line astern with one group of Frigates leading the BB and the CA’s while the other Frigates squadron went to the west edge to engage my Frigates. I advanced in line east to west Frigates, BB, CA’s, & Frigates. Things started happening quickly. Far too quickly! Both sides Frigates took damage & I think I lost one of my Eastern Frigates immediately. Hits were scored all around. Numerous (undeserved according to Greg. I agree) hits rained down on the Dwarf BB but their Admiral steeled himself and charged into the centre of the maelstrom. My Cruisers were dieing fast and I’d lost most of my Frigates. The Dwarf Frigates had sunk my Western Frigates & now controlled the sea west of the Pillars. Greg’s BB then delivers a particularly nasty broadside to my BB. With fires raging and water coming in from a dozen holes, the Shroud Mage BB forgoes gunnery and rams the enemy BB…for surprisingly little effect! But, just when all was gloom, while the ram was a failure, but boarding action that followed was a complete success. A prize crew sails off with the Iron Dwarf BB, but the Mages BB is up to 6 of its 8 hits, and only 2 Frigates remain. My Cruisers are but a memory. Such is the eternal hatred of the Iron Dwarfs for the Shroud Mages that the battle would long continue. Soon all Mages Frigates disappeared beneath the waves, as did all remaining Iron Dwarf ones except for a lone Cruiser. Closing to “half a pistol shot”, the Dwarf Cruiser let loose with a broadside that almost took out the Mage BB’s last 2 hits. Almost. Then the Mage BB’s broadside put an end to the valiant Dwarf Cruiser. Peace now returned to the foggy waters of Ironbottom Bay as the Mage BB limped home, the sole survivor of an epic sea battle.

Thanks Greg. That was the best game I’ve had in years! Lots of Tactics, fun, suspense and action. I’m looking forward to our second game of Uncharted Seas next Monday night with 800 point fleets.

Well after spending a week on want colour scheme I wanted, the Directorate are 95% done. I have 6 frigates to do bases and touch ups on. The fleet is made up of the follows.

RANK AND FILE NAPOLEONOICS

Well after many delays we manage to have another game of R&F. Short report below and I again only manage a few shots of the game as it progress.

Greg came over and we played another 15mm Napoleonics game using the “Rank & File” rules by Crusader. Greg played the Russians, me the French, with both sides having 4 infantry, 1 Guard infantry, 1 unit each of Light Cavalry, Lancer, and Cuirassier with 1 Foot battery of 2 medium guns and one horse battery of 2 light guns. Looking at Greg’s blog will give you the best idea of the scenery, mainly rolling hills. Both sides got hurt bad in the centre and Greg’s medium guns seemed to never miss, causing a fearful slaughter to my Guard infantry. Greg swept around my left, outflanking my position with infantry across the river. He’d also taken the town. On my right things looked better as I was able to throw back his cavalry advance, though at terrible cost. I was finally able to get the advantage on this flank, even threatening his guns and routing several infantry & cavalry. In the end, Greg “hit morale” before I did, giving the French a costly marginal victory. A great game and we certainly had lots of fun.
